Isla de Eivissa

Breaking news! Just shy of our arrival to Ibiza (Eivissa), I discovered that my passport had not boarded the plane with me...just another adventure, I suppose.  The airport security in Ibiza called Palma, but it was nowhere to be found.  So Hollywood and I will have to adventure to the US Embassy in Madrid when we get there.

Now, back to the story.  Besides that one small blip, we arrived in Ibiza where Esteban collected us and transported us to the town of Santa Eularia, where he would be marrying Lorena the following day.  After settling into our hostel we headed out of doors to explore the town. We met up with Lorena, Teresa and Jorge, as well as many of the family.  We stopped for an evening snack, and then took a long stroll along the waterfront with Tere and Jorge, while Lore was getting her hair done.  We then proceeded to Lore's aunt's house where we ate too much of the delicious dinner, and I discovered Kalimotxo.  Kalimotxo is a delicious and refreshing beverage made of red wine and coke!  Who'd a thunk? After a quick walk to Lore and Esteban's house, we returned to town to rest up for the next day’s festivities.

First thing the following morning, Hollywood and I went for a quick jog through town and along the waterfront.  It felt good to loosen our legs after a week of travels.  After breakfast, featuring Colacao, my new favorite chocolate drink, we caught up with Tere and Jorge and drove into Ibiza to explore the old town.  We ascended the hill to the old fort and cathedral, racing part of the way...Hollywood kept winning; I think he cheated ;]  The views were fantastic, the rolling hills, bay, port, oh and the lizards!

Cute long green lizards that were hunting or people watching kept popping their heads out.  We wound our way down thru the narrow cobblestone streets, to the port below. Being the slow season, most of the shops and restaurants were closed up, and I was unsuccessful in finding a dress for the wedding. Having worked up an appetite, we headed back to Santa Eularia, where we ate at a waterfront cafe and enjoyed our first (and second!) pitcher of Sangria.  Delicioso!

Wedding time arrived and we journeyed to the hilltop church with Jorge and Tere.  The bride and groom were handsome and happy, and soon wed.  Photos were taken, rice was thrown and the party headed to the resort for dinner and dancing.  Dinner was a relaxed affair, with cream of mushroom soup to begin- Hollywood's favorite! A filet of white fish, followed by braised short ribs, and a triple chocolate wedding cake! Can you say food coma?  Tere and I were struggling to keep our eyes open until we headed to the dance floor and were soon wide awake and jiggin!  We finally pleaded fatigue around 3am and headed home to bed.

Sunday morning came too fast and we stumbled down to breakfast bleary eyed and lazy.  The day's agenda was to tag along with Tere and Jorge on a tour of the island's coves.  We drove north to a small beach called Aguas Blancas and did a mini hiking tour.
We snapped some pics, set up the tripod and Hollywood ventured into the water for some wet time.
Next we headed up to Portinatx, a seaside paradise beach.  On one side you can rent SCUBA gear and venture into the water, and on the other you can walk along the cliff looking into tide pools.  We took the tide pool route, seeking out crabs, shrimp and whatever else piqued our interest.  We found a few crabs in some pools but couldn't make them come out to play.
And then, all in one itsy bitsy pool, we found a crab, a shrimp, and a baby octopus!  Jorge caught the octopus and held it in his hand for all of us to see.  The octopus responded gracefully by chomping its beak into his hand, and when let back into the water, it inked to show us its power.  Definately the COOLEST!!!

From Portinatx we continued south, getting lost along the way in search of Cala Salada.  Fortunately for the non-drivers, we were sleeping and didn't realize it at all.  Cala Salada was listed as a blue-flag beach, which was supposed to mean it was pristine.  However, upon arrival, we found the exact opposite.  There was trash everywhere and a large party of people barbecuing on the beach, making the mess worse.  There was an abundance of skipping stones about, so there was a positive note to the stop.  We left a few minutes after arriving, speeding south to fill our bellies. The car headed to Sant Antoni and we found an open bar on the beach.  The prices were low and the rations big and we were pleasantly plump soon thereafter.  From Sant Antoni we headed to a cliff that required a 4x4 vehicle and a half-mile walk.

The sea was probably fifty feet below, but for the adventurous  there was a slightly angled ramp leading all the way down to the water.  The waves were crashing at my feet, though I was protected by some upward sloping rocks.  The next stop on the adventure was Cala Bassa, but only for a few minutes and pictures.  The sun was setting and we were in a rush to see the water steam!  We raced over to Platges Comte, a westward facing beach/cliff and waited for the show.  Over the next half hour our group of four took about 100 pictures, most of them trash, but we were able to come out with some pretty awesome shots.
We headed back to the hostel soon after for an expensive dinner of rabbit in red wine, lamb shanks and fried fish (whole, no chips).  Strangly- there was a cover charge of 1.25 euros per person, which they charged us as bread.  The cool thing was that at the end of the meal, we were served a variety of liquors on the house... yum!

Monday was our rest day, spent lounging over pictures and fish along the piers.  We headed out of Ibiza the next morning, chasing the sun toward Madrid.
